What Is Car Key Programming?
Car key programming is the process of registering a new or replacement key to your vehicle’s immobiliser system. Without this step, a correctly cut key will physically open your door — but the engine will not start.
Most vehicles manufactured from around 2000 onwards use an immobiliser system that requires the key’s electronic chip to send a unique, authenticated signal to the car’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) before the engine will fire. If that signal doesn’t match what the ECU expects, the immobiliser activates and prevents starting.
This is why you can’t simply get a key cut at a hardware store and expect it to work. Programming is a separate, technical step that requires professional diagnostic equipment — the same equipment used by dealerships.
The Three Layers of a Modern Car Key
Understanding why programming matters helps explain what we do:
1. The Physical Cut The key blade must be cut to match your door and ignition lock profile. For laser-cut and high-security keys, this requires specialist cutting equipment.
2. The Transponder Chip Embedded inside the key head, the transponder chip stores an encrypted code that must match your vehicle’s immobiliser. This code is programmed — not cloned from another key.
3. The Remote Signal (where applicable) Keys with remote locking/unlocking contain a separate RF transmitter that must be synced to your vehicle’s central locking system.
All three layers need to be correct for a replacement key to work fully. Fleet Locksmiths handles all three on-site.
Car Key Programming Services in Geelong
Transponder Key Programming
The most common form of key programming. Transponder keys contain a small chip that communicates with your car’s immobiliser via radio frequency. We program transponder keys for virtually all makes and models, including all-keys-lost situations where the vehicle’s security system must be fully accessed.
Our transponder programming service covers:
- New transponder key programming (with spare key present)
- All-keys-lost programming (no working key required)
- Transponder chip replacement and re-programming
- Immobiliser reset and re-registration
- ECU key synchronisation
Smart Key & Proximity Key Programming
Smart keys — also called keyless entry, push-to-start, or comfort access keys — are the most advanced key type on the market. They allow you to unlock and start your vehicle without physically inserting a key, using short-range encrypted wireless communication.
Smart key programming requires advanced, vehicle-specific diagnostic tools. Fleet Locksmiths carries the equipment to handle smart keys for most makes and models, including European luxury vehicles where this technology is most prevalent.
Our smart key programming service includes:
- Push-button start key programming
- Proximity fob registration
- Comfort access key programming (BMW, Audi, Mercedes)
- KESSY system programming (Volkswagen/Audi Group)
- KEYLESS-GO programming (Mercedes-Benz)
Remote Key & Key Fob Programming
Remote keys combine a physical transponder key with an integrated RF remote for central locking. Key fobs are standalone remotes that work alongside a separate key blade.
We program and sync remote keys and fobs for all vehicles, including:
- Replacement remote key programming and syncing
- Key fob re-syncing after battery replacement
- Additional remote programming (adding a second remote)
- Flip key remote programming
- Aftermarket remote syncing
Spare Key Programming
The single most cost-effective thing a vehicle owner can do is get a spare key programmed before they need it. Adding a spare key when you already have a working key is faster, simpler, and significantly cheaper than an all-keys-lost replacement.
Fleet Locksmiths can add spare keys to your vehicle’s immobiliser system for most makes and models on-site at your home or workplace.
Stolen Key Deletion & Security Reset
If your keys have been stolen, it’s critical to remove the stolen keys from your vehicle’s system before they can be used. Where the vehicle supports it, Fleet Locksmiths can:
- Delete all previously programmed keys
- Re-program your retained key(s) to the newly cleared system
- Program fresh replacement keys
- Advise on additional security measures including Ghost 2 immobiliser installation
Contact us as soon as possible after key theft — call 1800 00 3533.
Key Shell Replacement & Reprogramming
If your key’s physical casing is damaged or worn but the electronics still work, a shell replacement can save you the cost of a full key replacement. We remove the electronics from the old shell, transfer them to a new case, and retest — reprogramming if the transfer requires it.
Signs You Need Car Key Programming
Not sure if programming is the issue? These are the most common signs:
- Car won’t start with a new or replacement key — The key was cut correctly but not programmed to your immobiliser
- Security light stays on — The immobiliser is not recognising your key’s transponder signal
- Key intermittently fails to start the car — Transponder chip may be failing or losing sync
- Remote locking stops working — The remote has lost its sync with the central locking module
- Key stopped working after battery replacement — Some vehicles lose key sync during battery changes and require re-registration
- Key works in the door but not the ignition — Classic sign of a programmed ignition key that has lost its transponder registration
- You’ve replaced the key shell and it no longer works — Transferring electronics between shells can disrupt programming on some vehicles
European & Luxury Vehicle Key Programming
Fleet Locksmiths specialises in European vehicle key programming — an area where many general locksmiths lack the equipment or training to help. We’ve invested in the dealer-level diagnostic tools required to work with the sophisticated security systems found in BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Land Rover, and more.
BMW Key Programming Geelong
BMW uses some of the most advanced key systems in the industry, with several different platforms across model generations:
- CAS (Car Access System) — E-series vehicles (E46, E90, E60, X5 E53/E70 etc.)
- FEM/BDC modules — F-series and early G-series vehicles
- Comfort Access — Keyless entry and push-button start across multiple generations
- Display Keys — Latest G-series with touchscreen LCD key
Each system requires specific programming procedures and tools. Fleet Locksmiths handles all BMW key types across the full model range — 1 through 8 Series, X1 through X7, M Series, Z4, and i-Series electric models.
Mercedes-Benz Key Programming Geelong
Mercedes key programming covers multiple systems depending on model year and variant:
- NEC/EIS systems — W204, W212, W166 and related platforms
- KEYLESS-GO smart keys — Push-button start across current model range
- Chrome IR remote keys — Older C, E, and S-Class models
- Emergency key blade programming — For smart key models with integrated blade
We service the full Mercedes range including A through S-Class, GLA through GLS, CLA, CLS, AMG models, and commercial Sprinter and Vito vehicles.
Volkswagen, Audi & VAG Group Key Programming
The Volkswagen Auto Group shares key architecture across its brands — VW, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT — but programming complexity increases significantly with newer models:
- Standard immobiliser systems — Pre-2010 VAG vehicles
- MQB platform — Golf 7/8, Polo, Tiguan, A3, Q2, Q3, Leon, Octavia from 2012 onwards
- KESSY — Keyless Entry, Start and Exit System across VAG premium models
- Component protection — Newer VAG vehicles require dealer-authorised key registration in some all-keys-lost scenarios
Fleet Locksmiths covers Volkswagen (Golf, Polo, Tiguan, Touareg, Amarok, Passat), Audi (A1 through A8, Q2 through Q8, TT, R8, e-tron), Skoda, and SEAT.
Porsche Key Programming Geelong
Porsche’s PASM and PCM-integrated key systems require specific Porsche-compatible diagnostic tools. We program keys for Cayenne, Macan, Panamera, 911, Boxster, and Cayman.
Land Rover & Range Rover Key Programming Geelong
Land Rover and Range Rover models use sophisticated PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) and KVM (Key and Vehicle Module) architectures. We program keys for all variants including Defender, Discovery, Sport, Velar, Evoque, and the full Range Rover range.
Japanese & Korean Vehicle Key Programming
Japanese and Korean vehicles make up the majority of cars on Geelong roads, and Fleet Locksmiths programs keys for all of them.
Toyota — Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Kluger, HiLux, Land Cruiser 200 and 300 Series, Prado, Yaris, C-HR, HiAce, and commercial vehicles. Toyota’s Smart Key System requires professional programming across all models from approximately 2005 onwards.

Honda — Jazz, Civic, Accord, HR-V, CR-V, Odyssey, and Type R models.

Lexus — RX, NX, UX, IS, ES, LS, LC, LX — all using Toyota’s Smart Key architecture.
Isuzu — D-Max, MU-X, and commercial vehicles.
Car Key Programming vs Key Cutting — What’s the Difference?
These are two separate steps that are both required for a replacement key to fully work:
| Key Cutting | Key Programming | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Shapes the physical blade to match your lock profile | Registers the electronic chip to your immobiliser |
| Tools required | Key cutting machine | Diagnostic programming equipment |
| Can it be done at a hardware store? | Sometimes (basic keys only) | Never |
| Is it needed for all cars? | Yes | All vehicles post-2000 |
| What happens if skipped? | Key won’t open doors | Key opens doors but won’t start engine |
Fleet Locksmiths performs both steps on-site in a single visit.
How Long Does Car Key Programming Take?
Programming time varies by vehicle and key type:
- Standard transponder key (with spare present): 20–40 minutes
- Remote key fob syncing: 15–30 minutes
- Smart key/proximity key programming: 30–60 minutes
- All-keys-lost programming: 45–90 minutes depending on vehicle
- European luxury vehicle programming: 45–90 minutes depending on model
These timeframes are from when our technician arrives on-site. Fleet Locksmiths typically arrives within 30–60 minutes of your call across Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, and the Surf Coast.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you program a car key without the original? Yes. Fleet Locksmiths can program new keys in all-keys-lost situations for most vehicles. Some makes require additional security procedures, so contact us with your vehicle details and we’ll confirm what’s involved.
Will a locksmith’s programming be as good as a dealership’s? Yes. We use the same level of diagnostic tooling as dealerships. The programming is performed to OEM specification — your new key will function identically to a factory key.
My car key stopped working after I changed the battery — is that a programming issue? It can be. Some vehicles lose key synchronisation during a battery change and require re-registration. Call us on 1800 00 3533 and we can diagnose whether it’s a programming issue or a faulty key.
Can you add a second key to my car without reprogramming the existing one? Yes, in most cases. Adding a spare key registers the new key alongside your existing key without erasing it. This is the most common and cost-effective spare key service we provide.
My key opens the door but won’t start the car — is that a programming problem? Almost certainly. This is the classic symptom of a key that has been cut correctly but not programmed, or a transponder that has lost its registration. Call us and we’ll have it sorted on-site.
Do you carry key blanks in the van? Yes. Our mobile workshop carries an extensive range of key blanks for most makes and models. For less common vehicles, we can usually source blanks same day.
