What Is a Key Fob and Why Does Replacement Require Programming?
A key fob is the electronic remote device attached to — or integrated into — your car key. Depending on your vehicle, it may control central locking, boot release, panic alarm, and push-button start. Most modern fobs also contain a transponder chip that communicates with your vehicle’s immobiliser.
Unlike a house key that can be cut at any hardware store, a replacement key fob must be electronically programmed to your vehicle’s specific security system before it will work. Without this step, the fob will be physically identical to your original — but the car won’t respond to it.
This is why key fob replacement is a job for a trained automotive locksmith with professional diagnostic equipment, not a general key cutter.
The Two Sides of a Key Fob
The Remote (RF transmitter) Controls central locking, boot release, and panic alarm via a rolling-code radio frequency signal. This must be synced to your vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM) or central locking receiver.
The Transponder Chip Embedded in the key head, this chip authenticates with your vehicle’s immobiliser ECU every time you start the car. Without a correctly programmed transponder, the engine will not start even if the remote functions work perfectly.
Both components must be correctly programmed for a replacement fob to fully function.
Key Fob Replacement Services in Geelong
Complete Key Fob Replacement & Programming
For lost, stolen, or severely damaged fobs where the electronics cannot be salvaged. We supply a new fob, cut the key blade where required, and program both the transponder and remote functions to your vehicle on-site.
Covers:
- Standard remote key fobs (lock/unlock/boot)
- Flip keys with integrated fob
- Smart keys and proximity fobs (push-button start)
- Keyless entry fobs (remote-only, no key blade)
- Comfort access fobs (European vehicles)
Key Fob Shell Replacement
If your fob’s electronics are still functional but the casing is cracked, broken, or worn — a shell replacement can save you the cost of full replacement. We remove the circuit board and transponder from your old shell, transfer them into a new matching case, and retest all functions. Reprogramming is performed if the transfer disrupts the signal.
This is a cost-effective option for fobs with physically damaged housings but working internals.
Key Fob Re-Syncing
Sometimes a fob loses its sync with the vehicle’s central locking receiver without the electronics actually failing. This can happen after a flat car battery, after a battery replacement in the fob itself, or occasionally due to signal interference.
Fleet Locksmiths can re-sync your existing fob to your vehicle on-site in most cases, without needing to supply a new fob at all.
Spare Key Fob Programming
Adding a spare fob while your original is still working is the most cost-effective key fob service we offer. It’s significantly cheaper than an emergency replacement when you’ve lost your only fob, and avoids the risk of being stranded.
We can add a spare fob to your vehicle’s system on-site at your home or workplace — we recommend doing this at the same time as any other service visit to save on callout costs.
Stolen Fob Deletion & Security Reset
If your key fob has been stolen, the stolen fob should be removed from your vehicle’s system as a priority. Where the vehicle supports it, Fleet Locksmiths can:
- Delete all registered fobs from the system
- Re-register your retained fob(s)
- Program new replacement fobs
- Advise on additional security measures including Ghost 2 immobiliser installation

Signs Your Key Fob Needs Replacing or Reprogramming
- Remote locking and unlocking has stopped working — could be a dead battery, lost sync, or failed electronics
- Car doesn’t detect the fob for push-button start — transponder or proximity sensor issue
- You have to press the button multiple times for it to work — worn buttons or weakening signal
- Range has significantly reduced — you need to be very close to the car for it to respond
- Fob casing is cracked or broken — water or physical damage may have affected the circuit board
- Buttons are physically damaged or missing — shell replacement or full replacement needed
- Fob works intermittently — could be a loose connection, failing battery, or programming fault
- You’ve lost your only fob — full replacement and programming required
Key Fob Types We Replace & Program
Standard Remote Key Fobs
The most common type. A standalone remote unit — sometimes with a detachable emergency key blade — with buttons for lock, unlock, boot release, and panic. Used across most Japanese, Korean, and Australian vehicles from the late 1990s onwards.
Flip Keys (Folding Keys)
A fob with an integrated key blade that folds into the housing when not in use. Common on Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Ford, Holden, Hyundai, and Kia models. The fob and transponder are both integrated into the flip key unit and must be programmed together.
Smart Keys & Proximity Fobs
Used on most vehicles from approximately 2012 onwards. The fob communicates passively with the vehicle — you don’t need to press a button. As long as the fob is in range, the car unlocks when you touch the handle and starts when you press the button. Smart keys contain both proximity sensors and transponder chips and require advanced programming equipment.
Common on: Toyota (Smart Key System), Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, BMW (Comfort Access), Mercedes-Benz (KEYLESS-GO), Audi/VW (KESSY), Porsche, Land Rover.
Keyless Entry Fobs (Remote Only)
A standalone remote used solely for central locking with no key blade and no push-start function. Found on older vehicles where keyless entry was added as a feature but push-button start was not. Requires syncing to the BCM but no transponder programming.
Integrated Transponder Keys
Older vehicles (roughly 2000–2010) where the transponder chip is embedded in the key head rather than a separate fob. No remote buttons — just the chip. Requires transponder programming but not remote syncing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a key fob the same as a car key? Not exactly. A key fob is the electronic remote component — it may be a standalone remote or integrated into the key itself. Some vehicles have a separate key blade and fob, while modern smart key vehicles combine everything into a single unit. In all cases, the fob’s electronics must be programmed to your vehicle.
My key fob battery is dead — do I need a full replacement? Not necessarily. A dead battery is the most common cause of a non-responsive fob and is the cheapest fix. However, if the fob doesn’t work after a battery replacement, the issue may be a lost sync or failed electronics — both of which Fleet Locksmiths can diagnose and resolve on-site.
Can I program a key fob myself? For some older vehicles, basic remote re-syncing can be done through a self-programming procedure (usually involving a sequence of ignition and door actions). However, smart key programming, transponder registration, and most modern fob programming cannot be self-programmed and require professional diagnostic equipment.
What’s the difference between a key fob replacement and a re-sync? A re-sync restores the connection between your existing fob and the vehicle — no new hardware required. A replacement involves supplying and programming a completely new fob unit. Re-syncing is cheaper and quicker, but only possible if your existing fob is physically intact.
Will a cheap aftermarket fob from eBay work? Aftermarket fobs can work for basic remote functions on some vehicles, but they are generally not compatible with modern immobiliser systems and smart key platforms. They also carry the risk of poor build quality and short lifespan. Fleet Locksmiths supplies quality replacement fobs that are programmed correctly and backed by a 12-month warranty.
Do you carry key fob stock in the van? Yes. Our mobile workshop carries fob blanks and shells for a wide range of makes and models. For less common vehicles we can usually source stock same day.
Can a stolen fob be used to steal my car? Potentially, yes — especially on vehicles without additional security. A stolen fob that is still registered to the vehicle can be used in a relay attack or direct access attempt. Contact Fleet Locksmiths immediately to delete the stolen fob from your system. We also strongly recommend Ghost 2 immobiliser installation for high-value vehicles as a permanent defence against keyless theft.
