A key fob is the electronic remote device attached to — or integrated into — your car key. Depending on your vehicle, it may control central locking, boot release, panic alarm, and push-button start. Most modern fobs also contain a transponder chip that communicates with your vehicle’s immobiliser.
Unlike a house key that can be cut at any hardware store, a replacement key fob must be electronically programmed to your vehicle’s specific security system before it will work. Without this step, the fob will be physically identical to your original — but the car won’t respond to it.

The Two Sides of a Key Fob
